The Jim Hayes Journalism Scholarship Endowment was created to pay tribute to Jim Hayes, a longtime journalism professor at Cal Poly. The scholarship supports upper division or graduate students majoring in journalism with preference to students concentrating in news editorial or agricultural journalism.

Area of Interest: I would like to incorporate a multimedia element into every story, specifically focus on interactive storytelling through data and broadcast journalism.

Area of Journalism: I would like to pursue longform journalism. Telling in-depth stories through both words and video is what I’m most passionate about.

Role in Mustang News: I served as a sports reporter, news editor and Editor-in-Chief of Mustang News before creating Mustang News’ first-ever native advertising agency as Sponsored Content Director.

Area of Journalism: I would like to cover politics, in a metropolitan area in CA, or in Washington DC. My basis for storytelling is writing, but I am very interested in how technology, specifically the web, can be used to tell stories in interesting, effective ways.

Role in Mustang News: I worked as a beat reporter covering campus administration, and am now the Managing Editor for News.
Katie McDermott
Hometown: Solvang, CA
Class standing: Senior
Area of interest: Digital storytelling, more specifically the videography side of things. My concentration in broadcast has strongly influenced that.
Minor: Media Arts and Technologies
Role in Mustang News: I held several positions at MN during the 2013-14 school year. They were: Broadcast Content Producer, Assignment Editor, and Interim News Manager for Broadcast.
